A Brief History of Wayne County
Wayne County was designated one of the first six original counties in the Northwest Territory of the U.S. in 1796. It was a huge county, comprised of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and most of the Upper Peninsula as well, and smaller sections that are now parts of northern Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. The boundaries were obviously adjusted as Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois became separate states.
